Developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), IPB Var 6 (NSIC 2008 Cn224) is white quality protein maize open-pollinated variety, with lysine content of 0.374%, that is 66.2% higher than normal corn (0.225%). It yields high in Luzon and Visayas (5.84 and 5.45 t/ha, respectively) and moderate in Mindanao (4.47 t/ha). It is resistant to lodging in spite of its relatively tall stature and has excellent ear-fill characteristics.

IPB Var 6 is usually milled, producing grits that is highly acceptable for food. The processed corn grits can be mixed with rice, which can serve as a healthier and even cheaper alternative staple than eating rice alone. IPB Var 6 is good for diabetics due to its low glycemic index (GI)which prevents blood sugar levels from suddenly going up (hyperglycemia) or down (hypoglycemia). Its low GI property makes it ideal food for those engaged in activities that require stamina.
